Basic tools required for the job (aside from
a good strong jack and stand)
18mm wrench, socket, ratchet, pry bar, ball joint tool (same as 3287a) and
penetrating oil.
Span
of the Jaw is about 20mm side to side and stage one opening is about 30mm and
stage two opening is about 50mm
up and down.
Step One:
Once you have safely jacked and secured the car, and removed
the tire, using your 18mm box end wrench, remove the nut on the ball joint end.
It may require some penetrant, and a little force. Long pattern wrenches are
good for jobs like this.
You get a lot more leverage, and dont end up using pipes, or cheaters, etc..
This makes it possible to remove
the joint without wanting to pull out the BFH, for which there is little room to
give a good swing anyway.
Give it about 1/2 turn and the
SHOULD joint pop out.
Next step:
is to remove the bolt that holds the inside on. Both sides are 18mm. An easy way
is to use a shallow socket to turn the bolt, holding the nut with the wrench. Or
use an 18mm deep offset wrench, which would work just fine. The nut usually
sits quite deep in the subframe.
Once you get the nut off, you need
to get the bolt out. The factory service manual says to lower the subframe at
the rear to get the bolt out. You dont absolutely have to
What you end up doing however is wiggling the bolt out, sliding it under the
fuel lines a little. It is not easy, but it is easier than lowering the subframe
in many cases.
If you were to lower the subframe,
you may need an alignment.
might consider getting one, as you never know how much you may have changed
the toe or camber by replacing a control arm but there is a little bit of play
in the pivot, and you never know exactly where it was when you started.
Getting the bolt to slide back into
the new arm for some reason was not as hard as taking it out of the old one. Be
VERY careful with the fuel lines (passenger side) or brake lines (driver side).
You will need to (somehow) preload
the suspension before you can torque the bolt on the inner end. You might use a
hydraulic bottle jack on a concrete block to push up on the bottom of the stud
for the front lower control arm. (Your floor jack might be a good idea too)
Jack it till it starts to lift the car off of your stand a tiny little bit. Be
very careful The jack could slip, which would cause the suspension to slam
down. If your head was in the way, it MAY leave a mark.
(Torque the bolt to APPROX. 66
lb/ft +1/4 turn)
Torque the ball joint nut to
APPROX. 74 lb/ft. You may need to hold the stud with an allen wrench, to keep it

This set is used to remove and install the valve spring with the cylinder head still on the engine and in the car, or with the cylinder head removed. The multi point adjustable base of this tool bolts securely to the head while the adjustable lever mechanism pivots from the bar thus compressing the spring. Quick removal and installation of the spring retaining keepers is then easily accomplished through the large openings on both sides of the compression tube. This set comes complete with an easy grip handle and a storage tray.
There are numerous variations in engine head designs
To set up the compressor the leg sets need to be installed on each end of the cylinder head with the valve cover bolts on to an area along the cylinder head that the legs can fit into. By bolting the legs to the cylinder head the round bar can be inserted through the legs to give a fulcrum point for the compressor arm. When bolting the legs to the head shims (washers) may be needed to give the legs clearance above any portions of the head. such as gasket alignment pins or cam towers. The compressor legs can also be bolted to the cam towers if necessary. Once the leg sets have been been firmly attatched and the round bar is inserted through the leg set holes, the compressor arm and bucket can be assembled using the clevis pin. Alignment of the center line of bucket to the center line of the valve spring is crucial! There are numerous adjustment holes in the compressor legs arm and bucket to allow alignment of the bucket to the valve spring.
The compressor arm has two detents that can give the arm the ability to compress the valve spring by either pushing down or pulling up on the handle depending on which detent is used and where the bucket is attached to the compressor arm. When alignment of bucket and valve spring is accomplished, the valve spring can be depressed and service to the valve components can proceed.

Torque + Angle Specification:
Example: If a torque + angle specification is given as 50 Nm + 70, the
fastener is first torque to a threshold of 50Nm; then it is turned 70. If
the specification reads 50Nm + 70, torque is first set to the 50Nm
threshold. Each bolt in the sequence is then turned 70 once. When the entire
sequence has been tightened to 70, each bolt in the sequence is given a second
70 turn.
The Torque + Angle Method:
Select a torque wrench, which indicates the threshold value at midrange. Torque
the fastener to the manufacturers threshold torque.
Attach the proper size socket to the gauge. Attach the socket with gauge to the
fastener.
Turn the arm clockwise until it meets a firm point of resistance.
Zero the gauge by turning the housing until it lines up with the 0 setting.
Connect a breaker bar, ratchet or other square drive to the gauge.
Holding the arm assembly firmly, turn the fastener the number of degrees
specified. The proper clamp load has now been set and no further torquing is

In the down position the separate wedge tool is placed between
the valve lifter ledge and the camshaft.
This wedge tool then maintains a gap between the shim and the camshaft

Triple square, also known as a XZN socket, is a type of screw drive. They are commonly found on German vehicles such as BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen etc...
These screws/fasteners are used in some high torque applications such as cylinder head bolts and drive train components.
Triple square bolts are common to early Porsche and Volkswagen (CV) constant velocity joints.
Most common earlier sizes would be 6, 8, 10, and 12.
Increasingly, triple square screws are found on other European and Asian makes of cars.
Other names for triple square screws and drivers are "Double Hex", "Double Allen", and "Aircraft Screws".
Despite this, "Double Hex" and "Double Allen" are misnomers. The recess in these bolts is actually (as the name suggests) made of three squares, not two hexagons.

Triple square, also known as a XZN socket, is a type of screw drive. They are commonly found on German vehicles such as BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen etc... These screws/fasteners are used in some high torque applications such as cylinder head bolts and drive train components. Triple square bolts are common to early Porsche and Volkswagen (CV) constant velocity joints. Increasingly, triple square screws are found on other European and Asian makes of cars. Other names for this type of triple square screws and drivers are "Double Hex", "Double Allen", and "Aircraft Screws". Despite this, "Double Hex" and "Double Allen" are misnomers. The recess in these bolts is actually (as the name suggests) made of three squares, not two hexagons. The corners are 90 degrees, not 120 degrees. They are not double hexes, and an Allen key will not fit them properly.

The multi point adjustable base of this tool bolts securely to the head while the adjustable lever mechanism pivots from the bar thus compressing the spring. Quick removal and installation of the spring retaining keepers is then easily accomplished through the large openings on both sides of the compression tube. This set comes complete with an easy grip handle and a storage tray.
There are numerous variations in engine head designs
To set up the compressor the leg sets need to be installed on each end of the cylinder head with the valve cover bolts on to an area along the cylinder head that the legs can fit into. By bolting the legs to the cylinder head the round bar can be inserted through the legs to give a fulcrum point for the compressor arm. When bolting the legs to the head shims (washers) may be needed to give the legs clearance above any portions of the head. such as gasket alignment pins or cam towers. The compressor legs can also be bolted to the cam towers if necessary. Once the leg sets have been been firmly attatched and the round bar is inserted through the leg set holes, the compressor arm and bucket can be assembled using the clevis pin. Alignment of the center line of bucket to the center line of the valve spring is crucial! There are numerous adjustment holes in the compressor legs arm and bucket to allow alignment of the bucket to the valve spring.
The compressor arm has two detents that can give the arm the ability to compress the valve spring by either pushing down or pulling up on the handle depending on which detent is used and where the bucket is attached to the compressor arm. When alignment of bucket and valve spring is accomplished, the valve spring can be depressed and service to the valve components can proceed.

TESTIMONIAL:
When I attempted to replace the front brake pads on a 2001 Mercedes S430, I discovered that my old Piston Reset Tool (the one everyone has in their garage, sold everywhere under different brands for less than $10) just
could not do the job. This is because the S430, like many other cars, has Dual Piston, Fixed Caliper brakes, which require a different Reset Tool (sometimes referred to as a Brake Pad Spreader).
When I went to Pep Boys, my salesman there told me that fixed calipers are a problem, and he
did not have the tool for the job. I went to an independent parts store, which had a tool that had been hanging on their wall since 1979 (it looked like a miniature scissors jack with a long screw), but it
could not have been inserted where it needed to be. NAPA had a catalog with a picture of something with a pistol grip on it that looked like it may or may not have worked. The Mercedes dealer can order a tool (MB 000 589 52 43 00) for $160 that looks like it could be used 1,000 times before it would come close to breaking or wearing out, which would be overkill; besides, it is huge and would take up too much room in my tool cabinet.
Bottom line: I had to buy a tool, and nobody stocks one, so I had to order something from somebody. I found the item number MK BRK J at ZDMAK for a very low price, and could see from the picture that it should work, so I ordered it.
I am glad I did ? it arrived on time, and it worked perfectly!
Procedure was simple:
I took the cap off of the master cylinder under the hood, then jacked up the car and removed the wheels. The calipers remained bolted to the car throughout the procedure (of course, if I was replacing the rotors also, I think I would have had to remove the calipers). After removing the retaining pin and spring from behind the pads, I inserted the Reset Tool arms between the small exposed edges of the backing plates on the brake pads. Then I turned the handle on the tool and the arms pushed away from each other and started pushing the brake pads away from the rotor. Once there was more space I put the arms of the tool against the face of the pads themselves and pushed the pads (and pistons) all the way back. The tools job was done; I then slid the old pads out, slid the now ones in, reinstalled the spring and pins and I was done (after checking the fluid level and putting the cap back on the master cylinder).
I feel that I did receive a super tool which does the job perfectly and should last a
DIY er a lifetime.
It does not take up too much space in the tool box,
and was also the least expensive option I found!
